If you are a college student, like me, then this INTRODUCTORY version of this book is the one that you need, because it has an additional, secret password code required for mandatory class assignment to be downloaded from the software maker’s web site.
Notice that this INTRODUCTORY version is way under 700 pages, while the COMPREHENSIVE version is over 700 pages. The worst thing about the COMPREHENSIVE version is that it does NOT contain the secret password code required for the online class assignments on the software maker’s website.
Don’t lose time and money buying the wrong version if you are a college student! The book on this page, with the word INTRODUCTORY in the title, is the one needed for college classes using the secret password. Warn your fellow students.
The publisher should have made this much clearer to avoid customer frustration!

Recently, I reviewed another programming book, How to Think Like a Programmer. Farrell’s text can be regarded as going beyond that one. Both do cover similar ground. As in explaining the mindset of a programmer; especially the need to think strictly and rigourously.
But here, Farrell takes the reader into the subject of object oriented programming. Showing why this has perhaps become the dominant preferred coding methodology for professional programmers. As opposed to procedural coding, which was the earlier paradigm.
She also covers event driven programs. Which can at first seem quite different from introductory examples of programs. You can see that event driven code is often closely associated with programs that need a GUI. And it is a reality of much current coding that you’ll have to write a GUI. So long as you carefully read the text, event driven programming will not be anything mysterious.

I am using this book in conjunction with a programming class I am taking and its a wonderful reference and guide book. It really helps you get a feel for the correct way to develop psuedocode and flowcharts for your programs. The only problem I have is that I wish there were more practice sessions within the book. Other than that really well developed. I would recommend this to any budding developers.

One of the worst text books I have ever had to use. Why would anyone spend more time show examples of what not to do, than what to do? If we taught people to drive this way there would be bodies strewn everywhere.
If you don’t want people to do something, you don’t show them five examples of what not to do and beat it into them, and only one example of what to do!
This author needs to learn proper teaching methods before trying to sell books!

I typed in the ISBN # for the comprehensive version of this book and amazon came up with this one, so I thought it was the right book. Although I didn’t know there was an introductory version that looks exactly like the comprehensive version. All and all I wasted my money and time buying this book, and the seller would not allow me to return the book.
